How to course correct when someone isn't delivering results

Apr 23, 2024

Managing a team comes with inevitable challenges, and one of the toughest is dealing with team members who aren't meeting expectations. But before you consider a replacement, I wanted to share an approach to navigating if the situation is salvageable (hopefully!) or a signal that it's time to part ways.

Here are a few key takeaways:

🗣️ Open a Dialogue: Instead of jumping to conclusions, ask the team member "What's getting in the way?" Often, they just need a little support or clarification, which can dramatically turn around their performance. At the very least, it gives you a better sense of what's really going on.

🎯 Reset Expectations: Clarify what success looks like... even if you feel like it's already clear. Make sure the team member knows exactly what is expected and the timelines for delivery. This will help in aligning their efforts with the team's goals and priorities.

🙏  Assess & Support: After providing feedback, observe if there's improvement. Is the team member committed to change? Are they taking responsibility? If not, it may be time to discuss their fit within the team.

Remember, it's not just about managing – it's about enabling and empowering your team to excel. Listen, support, and guide before making the hard call.
